Recently, Pascal Wyse set out to record the various sounds of the wild of the Antartic Peninsula.

Not the easiest of tasks, as the Antartic is notably famous for its cold, strong winds, that will make every recording a challenge in itself!

Below is the original video and a note from Pascal explaining how Rycote windshields made his work possible in such extreme conditions.

"The captain of the Akademik Ioffe, a Russian science ship, had done his best to outmanoeuvre the force 11 gale that stood between us and the Antarctic. Still, up on deck, the breeze was stiff enough to require two hands to steady the pistol grip of a Rycote. I was determined to capture the broadband roar of the tail and of the storm, layers of which form the opening section of this audio slideshow for the Guardian. Inside the windshield was a spaced pair of miniature pair of DPA omnidirectional microphones in a rig custom-made by Rycote, recording on to a Sound Devices 702. Hopefully the result – at least as far as the effectiveness of the windshields – speaks for itself."
