Softie™ Windshield

Rycote has been designing & manufacturing microphone shock-mounts & windshields since 1969. All our products are designed, engineered and hand-made in the U.K. The Rycote Softie™ is a slip-on microphone windshield that works by creating a controlled area of "still air" around the microphone.

Since inventing the Softie™ in 1987, Rycote has continued to develop this product to ensure that it provides a robust and practical windshielding solution suitable for the rigours of ENG and documentary work.

The Softie™ is 70 mm in diameter and is constructed of specially manufactured acoustic foam that is then fitted with an integral fur cover. The foam is exclusively designed for us and is not affected by moisture or UV light. The Softie™ fur is specially made for us and has been extensively tested to provide maximum wind protection, with minimum high frequency attenuation. The fur strands have a maximum length of 30 mm, which gives up to 25dB of wind noise reduction.

For Softie™ mounted on cameras, all sizes of Softie™ Windshield are available with "Short Hair" fur. The length of the fur is only 10 mm, as opposed to the standard Softie fur, which is 30 mm. As a result the shorter fur creates less shadows near the camera lens with only a minimal reduction in wind protection (gives up to approx. 22dB).

Advanced materials, adhesives and assembly techniques all combine to make the Softie an extremely tough product that provides excellent wind protection in the harshest of environments. Added to this all our products pass through a stringent 3-stage quality control process before reaching you.

Specifications

The Softie™ is suitable for microphones of the following diameters:

Standard Hole: 19 to 22 mm (0.75" to 0.87")
Large Hole: 24 to 25 mm (0.94" to 1.00")

It is available in the following lengths:

5 cm (2.0"), 10 cm (4.0"), 12 cm (4.7"),
14 cm (5.5"), 18 cm (7.0"), 24 cm (9.5"),
29 cm (11.5") & 32 cm (12.5")

Important Note: The length of the pick up 'slots' or 'vents' and the diameter of the microphone determine the correct Softie size. It is essential that all the 'slots' or 'vents' are covered by the Softie for it to work effectively.
